DELL'ARTE: Level I
Introduction to Comic Italian Mask Theatre

Description: Explore the roots of physical comic acting including
improvisation, comic business, comic... timing, through commedia
dell'arte and mask work with professional performer & Instructor Susan Bertoia.
In this workshop you will open yourself to the possibility of funny;
that is, physical funny. Commedia dell'arte is a form of mask theatre
that has been around for centuries. The commedia stock characters and
humorous situations are ones we can all relate to. Commedia is the
foundation for clown, vaudeville and the sitcoms of today. Warning: Be
prepared - this class may bring out the comedian in you!

Finding your Mask and Dealing With It

Description:
Discover the Commedia Dell’ Arte characters, scenarios and lazzi in this intensive, interactive, fast-paced workshop for anyone who is creative, energetic, witty and relies on his/her intuition as an artist. We will cover the stock characters, embody them and use their masks. Also, we will learn to create solo and duo lazzi as well as scenario. A final presentation, for an invited audience will round out the end of the workshop.
This four-session workshop is ideal for professional performers with some training either in mask or movement or both who want to further build on their physical performance skills. The workshop will review the historical context and importance of Commedia and move quickly into the practical use of mask.
The skills learned in this workshop are applicable to all elements of performance. The Commedia Dell’ Arte stock characters have been around for centuries; they are the foundation for clown, vaudeville and the sitcoms of today.

Instructors:
Susan
Bertoia is the Artistic Director of BellaLuna Productions as well as a professional theatre artist and teacher. She works extensively in movement-based theatre, physical comic theatre and mask performance. Susan also directs, designs and writes scripts for youth and BellaLuna Productions. Her fusion of physical theatre creation and aesthetic make for dynamic and unique performances.
Susan teaches Commedia Dell'Arte at the University of British Columbia and at schools throughout BC. Her professional studies include: a BFA from UBC, a Commedia Dell Arte introduction in Italy at 'Il Piccolo Teatro di Milano' with Giorgio Strehler and in Padua she learned the Tradition of Italian mask making with Donato Sartori, a summer intensive at Dell’Arte School of Physical (Blue Lake, California), a physical theatre intensive with Calgary’s One Yellow Rabbit and most recently participated in the International Voice Intensive with Richard Armstrong.
Professional theatre acting credits include work with the Arts Club Theatre, Boca Del Lupo, Western Canada Theatre and Richmond Gateway Theatre. Select creation/performances include: The Best Italian Variety Show – Ever! and her solo show Plum and Other Colours (BellaLuna Productions) and the all-woman clown circus CIRQUE POULE. She is the recipient of the Gordon Armstrong Theatre Artist Award.
